Back to School Style Inspirations

It’s that time of year again: the time when you slowly transition from summer vacation to your studies. Whether you’re in high school, undergrad, or graduate school, September is your month to get your mind back in the game! Why not do it in style? Teen Vogue and Refinery 29 have given us some back to school style inspirations to guide our looks!

The consensus reveals that preppy looks are still in style! Whether you like casual or dressy, here’s how you can achieve a stylish and preppy back to school look! Throw on your favorite blue-washed flare jeans, your bright-colored t-shirt and your favorite flat metallic loafers.

If you’d rather dazzle your friends and professors with a fancier look, we’re all for rocking a frilly and/or pleated mini-skirt! Pair the miniskirt with a button-down blouse to give your look a professional touch.

If you really want to turn some heads as you’re walking down the hallways, add a cropped moto jacket to your outfit. Whether you’re wearing jeans or a skirt, a colorful moto jacket will take your look to the next level by adding that extra touch of chicness!

For a book bag, stay away from the typical multi-colored knapsacks. Instead, opt for a cool solid-colored leather knapsack purse with a cool buckle or drawstring. These smaller, stylish bags can double as a book bag and a purse!

For shoes, we’re seeing so many hot trends surfacing this fall, including the metallic loafer, the patent oxford, and the pointed-toe mini high heel pump. Take your pick! Try silver, gold, black, or beige if you want versatile shoes that will match with a variety of your outfits!

Five Ways to be Fearless with your Style

A recent Refinery 29 article by Connie Wang, displays a long list of style options that could satisfy any bold fashion enthusiast!  We’ve narrowed the list down to our top five picks.  When it comes to developing your sense of style, it’s fun to branch out and be a little daring.  These five tips will undoubtedly be able to freshen up a stale wardrobe.

First, make room for over-sized clothing in you closet.  Whether it’s a pair of wide leg trousers or an over-sized baggy sweater, you can create an effortless look with clothing that drapes loosely over your body.   I’d suggest these wide leg trousers from Forever 21, featured below.  They’re stylish, comfy, and will look great paired with an over-sized sweater or a tight-fitting crop top.

Second, if you’re a fan of black outfits, Connie advises that each piece should really count!  If you’re going to wear a black jacket, why not make it a leather statement piece complete with buckles and silver zippers, like the one featured below from Nasty Gal.

Next on the list, is a jacket with leather-cut appliqués.  I can’t get enough of this colorful leather-cut jacket and handbag, featured in the Refinery 29 article.  This look has the perfect amount of color to make it stand out!

Now it’s time to get a little crazier.  You can make the hottest statement look by combining awesome patterns with bold solid color pieces.  Connie demonstrates this perfectly in the following picture.  My favorite is the hounds tooth pants paired with the yellow handbag.  The yellow comes to life when paired with the black and white color combination of the pants.

Last but not least, it’s time to take your shoes to the next level by opting for a pair with an exquisite architectural heel.  In my opinion, no one does it better than Julia Lundsten in her Skin by Finsk collection.  The black shoes featured below are bound to turn any outfit into a statement!

I’m with Connie that some people love dressing for an audience and enjoy the passing looks from people in the street.  If that’s you, then it’s time for you to give these head-turning tips a try!  Check out the StyleChat app for all your style browsing and shopping needs.

Wearing White in Winter

A great Refinery 29 article talks about the pro’s and con’s of wearing white in the winter.  Sure, it probably looks great when you see models wearing it in the magazines, or people wearing it on Instagram, but is it really practical?

Ana Colon, writer for Refinery 29 points out the stress that a spilled coffee or dinner date at an Italian restaurant could cause you when you’re sporting a white outfit.  However, there’s nothing like a great white dress or a pair of white skinny jeans to freshen up your day.  Don’t wait until the spring season to wear your favorite white apparel.

Whether you’re hanging out with friends on the weekend, or going to work, white can enhance your look in so many ways.  In the image featured below Aimee Song rocks a white fringe lace dress.

If you’re more into a fun layered look, try wearing white overtop of a colored bralette with a jacket thrown overtop.

Last but not least, try creating a business casual look by combining a white blouse with a black skirt or a pair of black pants.

Flaunt that Birthstone

Are you a fan of your birth month’s stone? Whether you wear it because you love it or avoid it because you’re not a fan, get ready to look into your zodiac birthstone.

The Meaning Behind Your Zodiac Birthstone,” Ellen Hoffman’s article for Refinery 29, tells you almost all you need to know about your zodiac birthstone. You can read about each stone’s history, the healing properties, symbolism, and how they relate to your zodiac sign. Hoffman’s article is based off of Florence Megemont’s book, “The Metaphysical Book of Gems and Crystals.”

So why should you care about a zodiac birthstone? Well, once you learn more about yours, maybe you’ll have a handful of new jewelry pieces to purchase. So get ready to make some room in your jewelry box for some more gorgeous gems!

I was curious about my zodiac birthstone. My birthday month is April and my birthstone is a diamond. The only diamonds I wear are diamond stud earrings. But my zodiac sign is a taurus, and according to Hoffman’s article, my zodiac birthstone is the “lapis lazuli.”

Although I had never heard of lapis lazuli, jewelry designer Liz Phillips says this gem was used for ages in jewelry and other decorative pieces. It was actually how a lot of Renaissance paintings got their blue shades! Not only was this stone used as paint at one point, designer Selin Kent says the Egyptians used to use lapis powder for eye shadows. Ooo!

Lapis was valuable to Pre-Columbian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures because it symbolized “honesty and wisdom.” Phillips says lapis was worn as a protective amulet. Megemont says lapis was thought to help develop patience and perseverance – great for stubborn tauruses, right?

The Sporty Trend: Makes Being Fashionable Less Painful

In the past, I specifically remember saying that “beauty is pain” every day I’d be walking in four-inch heels.

I thoroughly believed that being fashionable was synonymous with wearing outfits notorious for causing some sort of discomfort.  Whether it’s high heels that destroy your feet, chunky earrings that hurt your earlobes, or pencil skirts that restrict your ability to walk up a flight of stairs, women have been duking it out with fashion trends forever.

Finally, we have a fashion trend that makes it easier for women to feel good while looking good.  Connie Wang, writer for Refinery29, rejoices at the comfortable, sporty trend that has saturated the market.

Active-wear is now a fashion statement.  Slouchy clothing, loose-fitting track pants, and sneakers are just a few of the items that have single-handedly made it easier to dress fashionably while still being comfortable.

In her article, Wang jokes about being able to wear exercise clothes without actually having to break a sweat.  While I haven’t quite adopted spandex workout pants into my everyday wardrobe, I have however enjoyed the slouchy sweaters and the loose-fitting pants that look sporty in a relaxed and feminine way.

Like Wang, I remember those nights in college when I wore a short body con dress and stiletto heels to the bar, but now when I see those longer dresses and pleated skirts that have a tennis-skirt vibe, I wonder how and why it took so long for the sporty trend to become fashionable.

The best part about this trend is the fact that it can be expressed in so many different ways.  Throw a long knit sweater over a just above the knee pleated skirt and add a pair of sneakers, and you’ll look cute, comfy, and flirty.

Throw on a pair of track pants with mesh insets, pair it with a crop top and wedge heels and you’ll look effortlessly sexy.

Say goodbye to your painful wardrobe pieces and welcome the latest sporty trends into your closet. After all, what’s better than looking great and feeling great at the same time? Nothing.
