Denim on Denim: Do or Don’t?

Lately, the Denim on Denim trend has been consuming my thoughts. Is it a current “do” or is it a dated “don’t”? Is the trend dead now that summer is abruptly ending? Should we be expected to fall victim to this fashion escapade or do we let it slip away into the grave of all other failed trends?

If you ask me, it is very much alive and it is 100% a trend to fall victim to. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears did it 15 years ago (brief pause for the horror that was the early 2000’s) and look at the legacy they’ve left.

Now I’m not saying that in order to stay up on the current trend, you need to go to your nearest tailor and have an all denim dress made. (Although, that would be impressive and slightly iconic.) What I am saying though, is that you should not be afraid to flirt with the idea of an all denim outfit. Pairing some Madewell jeans with an Alice and Olivia denim jacket is not a terrible idea. In fact, it may be just the switch that you were looking for in your daily wardrobe.

Take a look at some of my favorite all denim outfits by some of the latest and greatest in the fashion world:

Alexa Chung is cute as can be; but with her all denim romper, she looks especially playful. Photo Courtesy of Elle.com

Here are some interesting denim pieces in stores now that I’ve thrown together. Head on over to the StyleChat App to shop and style some looks of your own! Don’t disappoint Justin and Britney, whatever you do.

The New Jean Trends that Everyone will Want

Everyone has their favorite pair of jeans.  Whether they’re skinny, flare, dark blue, white, and/or ripped, your fav go-to jeans shouldn’t be the only ones in your closet.  Women are turning from plain and simple, to wild and crazy with bold patterns, cool textures, and loud shapes.  Check out these jeans from Bloomingdales!  When you’re working with a wild pattern on the bottom, keep to solid colors on top!  Looking to make a statement this winter?  Any of these five pairs of jeans will help you take those fashion risks you’ve been craving!

Nasty Gal also knows how to rework our modern day jeans.  A bit of acid-washing combined with some minor rips or a wide-legged silhouette makes these three jeans refreshingly innovative and a touch rocker!

This week’s outfit of the week goes to a casual denim look featured on the Eat/Sleep/Wear blog. Whether you’re running errands or hanging out with friends, Kimberly’s outfit will keep you taking every step in style! Her light blue wash skinny jeans paired with a super light denim button down shirt makes her look casual, chic, and comfortable. It’s the accessories that take this denim look to the next level! The black sunglasses, black handbag, and black high heel sandals add a bold and slightly glamorous touch! On cold days, you could easily throw a cool moto jacket overtop to keep yourself warm. Check out the outfit below to see how you can get a similar look!

Get your Fashion Inspiration from the Street

Harper’s Bazaar counts down for us, some of the hottest spring street styles. The runways and magazines are great places to turn for fashion inspiration, but sometimes the best inspiration comes from taking a closer look at what people are wearing on the street.  We all see how our favorite items look on hangers in the store, but it’s truly inspirational when you get to see them paired with other hot items by people on the street.

The first street-trend in the Harper’s Bazaar article I’d like to focus on has already exploded in the market with colorful designs and cool platforms. I predict the sport sneakers trend is here to stay for a while with fresh and even-cooler styles.

I believe sporty-sneakers are in for a long rotation because, who doesn’t love a trend that is stylish, comfortable, and practical all at the same time?!  Best of all, you can dress them up or dress them down depending on what you wear with them.  Want to wear a skirt? No problem! Your funky sneakers will make your look chic and stylish, just like in the picture featured below.

The next thing we’ve learned from the street is, overalls are awesome! Light blue denim, dark blue denim, leather; they can all be used to make a stylish pair of overalls.  Whether you like the typical overall pants or overalls as a dress, this trend is not only hot and heavy on the streets, it’s also filling up the racks in all our favorite stores.  If you like this trend, check out these slightly distressed overalls from Zara.

Another trend on the street is the shirt-dress. The button down shirt dress is so versatile because you can wear it on it’s own, wear it with tights, put a cute belt around it to dress it up, or throw a sweater over top for extra warmth.

Style.com features some of the hottest shirt-dress ensembles, like the one in the featured image. Throw on some high heels and a hobo bag with your white shirt-dress and everyone will turn heads as you’re crossing the street.

So the next time you’re rummaging through a fashion magazine or surfing the Internet for the hottest trends, head to the city and walk outside. Some of the hottest trends are filling up our streets.

Sweater Weather to Leather Weather

As designers, fashion bloggers, and off-duty models alike have taught us, denim on denim can work! Now we’re not talking about that denim overload look that Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears sported at the 2001 American Music Awards. The current idea of denim on denim is much more refined. By mixing different shades of blue, playing with texture (like adding a chambray shirt to distressed jeans), and adding layers, modern day men and women can keep their ultra denim look cool and fashion forward.

The question now is: can the same look be achieved with leather pieces? There are ways to pull off this tough, biker look even in the upcoming spring and summer! Check out these fun looks created with StyleChat:

Throw a destroyed shirt over a leather tee dress and pair with this season’s trendy white leather Birkenstocks. Grab a brown leather backpack, and you’ll be grungy and good to go! For a nighttime version, put a huge crystal statement necklace on with the same leather dress. Add some leather and gauze heels from UNIF to give you a bit more height. The sassy leather clutch completes the look and is perfect for holding only the essentials while you’re out on the town.
