Halloween Costumes that will Make you Nostalgic for your Childhood

Smell that? The wonderful smell of sugar and spice, pumpkin chai, cinnamon vanilla latte (or something like that) is usually the first thing we encounter when we walk through the doors of our favorite coffee shop in October. It’s the smell that reminds us that Halloween is right around the corner. It’s time to carve out our pumpkins, buy those yummy little chocolates we see piled high in the grocery stores, and think up a fabulous costume idea.

First we have to decide on a general theme. Do we want to be scary? Sexy? Funny? Weird? Creative? The choices are endless! Why not try a costume that brings us back to our younger years? An article on Popsugar gives us some great ideas for costumes that will make us nostalgic for our childhood.

First on the list is Mrs. Doubtfire. Put on a white blouse with burnt stains, carry a couple cooking lids, and all the millennials at the party will know exactly who you are!

Are you looking for the perfect group costume? Why not recreate the cast of The Breakfast Club? Let the girly girl be Molly Ringwald’s character and the tough guy can be Bender!

Perhaps you’re looking for something a bit cuter, softer, and furrier? What better way to indulge in your childhood than dress up as your favorite care bear! Pick your favorite color fur, choose your superpower symbol, and you’re ready to go!

Last but not least, we’ve got a costume that’s great for either gender and all you need is some red and white striped clothing and a pair of round black glasses. Make your childhood memories of looking for Waldo come to life by dressing as Waldo from Where’s Waldo this Halloween!

How to Decorate your Living Space when you’re Living with Roommates

You’ve grown up, moved out of your parents’ place, and gotten your independence, but have you really?  One of the most common problems young women endure is sharing their living space with one or more people. We all know that living with roommates can be fun on a Friday night when you’re getting ready to celebrate the weekend, but when Monday comes and reality sets in, you’re left learning how to cope with the situation.  This is when you find yourself having to compromise in order to be considerate to your roommates. While compromising is good, here’s how you can decorate your living space to your satisfaction without stepping on each other’s toes.

First, have an open conversation about your likes and dislikes. You might be presently surprised to find that you have the same favorite band or favorite color. Take a minute to run through each other’s Pinterest boards to find some similarities in your interests.

If this results in the realization that you have nothing in common, don’t worry just stick to the basics when decorating. Who doesn’t like inspirational phrases or subtle neutral colors?  This picture frame from Urban Outfitters is simple, classic, and inspirational, and very unlikely to disturb a roommate like some of those other crazy colorful neon posters you may have wanted to use instead.

When you’re decorating your place with furniture, there’s a fine line between having too much crammed into a small space and not enough. Try buying a piece of furniture that doesn’t take up a lot of space, while still keeping your stuff organized. The Urban Outfitters furniture rack featured here will most definitely please your roommate with your clothes and accessories will be hanging neatly rather than lying dispersed all over the apartment. A delicate furniture piece like this is effective for hanging and not overpowering in terms of size or color.

Just remember, your living space should reflect the tastes of everyone living there. Keep the common rooms simple if you can’t agree on a specific theme then add your own flavor to your individual bedroom.

The Fashion Mini Bar: Makes Traveling in Style Easier

Do you ever stress about how you’ll keep your style chic when you’re traveling? Any fashionista knows that it can be hard to plan your outfits when you’re going away on a trip. How can you predict what you’ll be in the mood for wearing? What if you forget the perfect sweater to wear over that new dress you just bought? Well, it seems that French designer Pimkie has taken this into consideration and has created a solution: a fashion mini bar in hotel rooms. An article on bustle.com explains how this concept works.

A hotel would offer a selection of clothing and accessories in your hotel room. If you’re looking for different styles or other sizes, you can contact the concierge to choose some other options from the menu in your room. You choose which styles you want to borrow and are charged later. So if you suddenly change your mind about wearing any of the clothes that you brought, this fashion mini bar concept would give you a chance to change your look while you’re traveling.

Perhaps you could even pack lighter, therefore making it easier for you to travel comfortably. This concept combines shopping and traveling in a new and exciting way that can help keep you stylish while you travel!

While this idea hasn’t made its way into all the hotels yet, you can find it at Hotel Banks in Antwerp, Belgium, and can expect to see it soon in a variety of hotels throughout Europe, including ones in London and Paris.

What do you think of this concept? Would you take advantage of a fashion mini bar if you had one in your hotel room? Share in the comments below!

The Changing Landscape of how Women Buy Beauty Products

I remember the days of walking through a department store from counter to counter checking out all the different beauty products from various brands. The only way to figure out which products would look best for my skin tone was to either ask the brand representative, or try them on. In seeking out advice, I was limited to whoever I was shopping with and the brand representative.

Nowadays, it’s a whole other story. We don’t even have to set foot in a mall or a store, and we’re not left fending for ourselves with an online store. We now have a community of beauty bloggers, friends, and subscription services to guide our decisions. We’ve gone from traditional shopping to guided, “social shopping.”  Antonia Opiah wrote an article for the Huffington Post describing three new ways that women are finding their beauty products.

Firstly, women are letting their friends guide their shopping choices via user curated shopping methods that help make the beauty buying process more social. You can check out what products your friends or beauty experts love and recommend. With the existence of social media sites, reading reviews and learning about new products has become a much simpler task!

The next trend lets your beauty routine become an exciting mystery from month to month with the beauty subscription box. Why limit yourself to full-size products that you may buy once or twice a year when instead, you could test out small samples from month to month? Finding the perfect beauty products to suit your individual tastes and complexions can be a tricky task. With a beauty subscription box, women can try new items every month so that they can figure out exactly what they like and what they don’t!

Last but not least, we’ve seen a re-emergence of the “beauty swap.” Beauty bloggers/vloggers are actually swapping their makeup amongst each other so that everyone can find the products that suit them well and pass on the ones that don’t! This is just another way you can get social with shopping and reap the rewards of paying less and getting more!

Wearable Tech Trends You’ll Want to See

We’ve all seen the emergence of wearable technology, such as Google Glass, smart watch, and more, but these ideas are just the tip of the iceberg. While some are more frivolous than others, there are some that may turn out to be extremely convenient.

Imagine for instance, that you could charge your smart phone with your clothing. Designers are working towards using flexible solar panels in clothing to charge your devices. We’ve already seen the invention of handbags that can charge certain devices. This trend is definitely one that could make life a lot easier if successful.

Next up we have an air filter device that is worn around the wrist and purifies the air around you. Just imagine the air smelling fresh and clean everywhere you go. The smart watch may not be the only device you want to wear around your wrist!

Designer, Amy Winters, has experimented with clothing that changes in your environment. For example, she uses holographic leather that illuminates when the volume increases. She has also created a bathing suit that reacts to light. Our streets would be a lot more colorful and festive if everyone was wearing this exciting new wearable technology!

The next wearable trend to keep your eye on would be particularly helpful for bicycle enthusiasts. A DIY electronics company called Adafruit, has created a helmet that has a built-in navigational system. The helmet has lights that flash on the right or left to let the biker know which direction to turn so that you don’t have to be looking at your smart phone to know where to go. We all know biking while using a smart phone could be hazardous; this invention would help bikers keep their smart phones out of their hands while biking.

Last but not least, fashion designer Ying Gao, has incorporated eye-tracking technology into her designs. She has created dresses that move when eyes are looking at them. This would surely make discrete staring, a much harder task! Would you want to know when all eyes are on you? What’s your favorite emerging wearable technology? We’d love you to share in the comments below!

Flaunt that Birthstone

Are you a fan of your birth month’s stone? Whether you wear it because you love it or avoid it because you’re not a fan, get ready to look into your zodiac birthstone.

The Meaning Behind Your Zodiac Birthstone,” Ellen Hoffman’s article for Refinery 29, tells you almost all you need to know about your zodiac birthstone. You can read about each stone’s history, the healing properties, symbolism, and how they relate to your zodiac sign. Hoffman’s article is based off of Florence Megemont’s book, “The Metaphysical Book of Gems and Crystals.”

So why should you care about a zodiac birthstone? Well, once you learn more about yours, maybe you’ll have a handful of new jewelry pieces to purchase. So get ready to make some room in your jewelry box for some more gorgeous gems!

I was curious about my zodiac birthstone. My birthday month is April and my birthstone is a diamond. The only diamonds I wear are diamond stud earrings. But my zodiac sign is a taurus, and according to Hoffman’s article, my zodiac birthstone is the “lapis lazuli.”

Although I had never heard of lapis lazuli, jewelry designer Liz Phillips says this gem was used for ages in jewelry and other decorative pieces. It was actually how a lot of Renaissance paintings got their blue shades! Not only was this stone used as paint at one point, designer Selin Kent says the Egyptians used to use lapis powder for eye shadows. Ooo!

Lapis was valuable to Pre-Columbian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures because it symbolized “honesty and wisdom.” Phillips says lapis was worn as a protective amulet. Megemont says lapis was thought to help develop patience and perseverance – great for stubborn tauruses, right?
